crypto wallet

A crypto wallet is your personal gateway to managing Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies with complete control. It´s safeguards your private keys that allow access to your crypto on blockchain, ensuring every transaction remains secure and exclusively yours. Whether you’re sending, receiving, or tracking your balance, a crypto wallet gives you the freedom to access your assets anytime, anywhere—with ease and peace of mind.

Let´s know more about it!

Understanding Crypto Wallets

Cryptocurrencies operate on decentralized networks based on blockchain technology. A blockchain is a distributed ledger that records all transactions across a network of computers. Your crypto wallet interacts with these blockchains to facilitate the management of your digital assets. It does not store the currency itself but holds the keys that grant access to your funds on the blockchain. Losing these keys can result in the loss of access to your assets, highlighting the importance of wallet security.

Think of a crypto wallet as a keychain that holds the keys to several safety deposit boxes (your cryptocurrencies) located in a vast, decentralized bank (the blockchain). Each key (private key) gives you access to a specific box (your funds). If someone else gets hold of your key, they can access your box and take its contents. Therefore, keeping your keys secure is crucial.

An example is Klever Wallet, a non-custodial wallet that ensures only the user has control over their private keys and, consequently, their funds. It offers advanced security with strong encryption, support for multiple blockchains, integrated swapping, and staking—all within an intuitive interface. Since it interacts directly with the blockchain without intermediaries, it provides total autonomy and maximum privacy for the user.

Types of Crypto Wallets

There are some types of cryptocurrency wallets., each offering different levels of security and convenience. The main categories include:

Hot Wallets

Hot wallets are connected to the internet, making them easily accessible for frequent transactions. However, this connectivity also makes them more susceptible to online threats. Types of hot wallets include:

  • Browser extension wallet: Accessible through web browsers, these wallets are user-friendly, such as Klever Extension. It’s a multi-chain cryptocurrency wallet compatible with Chrome, Brave, Microsoft Edge, and Opera, it enables seamless interaction with decentralized applications (dApps), decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, games, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) across various blockchains.
  • Mobile Wallets: Apps installed on mobile phones offer convenience and quick access anywhere. They are ideal for daily transactions but can be compromised if the device is lost or attacked by hackers, such as Klever Wallet.  Therefore, they must contain the 24-word password provided in the app, making them more secure.

Cold Wallets

Cold wallets are offline storage solutions, providing enhanced security by keeping private keys away from internet access. Types of cold wallets include:

  • Hardware Wallets: Physical devices that securely store private keys offline. Users connect them to a computer or mobile device when a transaction is needed. An example is the KleverSafe hardware wallet, a multi chain wallet, designed to provide robust security for your digital assets. It offers offline storage for private keys, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorized access and cyber threats.
  • Paper Wallets: Physical documents containing private keys and QR codes, allowing access to cryptocurrencies. While immune to online attacks, they can be lost, damaged, or stolen and require careful handling. Also, don’t take a photo or save the information on something that connects to the internet

Crypto Wallet Security

Ensuring the security of your crypto wallet is paramount to protect your digital assets. Here are essential practices to consider:

  • Use Hardware Wallets for Significant Holdings: If you have a lot of cryptocurrency, a hardware wallet like KleverSafe keeps your private keys offline, making it much safer from online threats.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding an extra layer of security, 2FA requires a second form of verification, making unauthorized access more difficult.
  • Regularly Update Software: Keeping your wallet software up to date ensures you have the latest security features and patches.
  • Backup Your Wallet: Maintain secure backups of your wallet’s private keys or seed phrases in multiple safe locations. This practice is crucial for recovering access in case of device failure or loss.
  • Be Wary of Pushing Attempts: Always verify the authenticity of websites and emails related to your crypto activities to avoid falling victim to scams.

Public and Private Key

A crypto wallet uses public and private key cryptography to sign and verify transactions. The private key is a set of secret words (12 or 24 words), that should never be shared, as it grants full control over the wallet’s funds. The public key is derived from the private key using cryptographic algorithms and is used to generate wallet addresses. Others can send cryptocurrency to a wallet using the public key, but only the holder of the private key can authorize outgoing transactions.

Seed Phrases

Most wallets use a 12-word phrase to keep your funds safe, but at Klever, we’ve made it even more secure with a 24-word seed phrase. Following the BIP-39 standard, this method generates a backup key derived from the private key, allowing wallet recovery in case of device loss or damage. Since it grants full access to funds, it must be securely stored, preferably offline.  If a user loses access to their device, they can restore their wallet using the seed phrase. However, since this phrase provides full access to funds, it must be stored securely offline.
